Dickens, Charles & Sherri Browning Erwin. Grave Expectations. Gallery: S. & S. Aug. 2011. c.400p. ISBN 9781451617245. pap. $15. FANTASY
Erwin's previous literary mashup, Jane Slayre, embodies the flawless union of supernatural fiction and the best of classic literature. She continues in this captivating and fascinating tradition, here taking on Dickens's Great Expectations. There are no glossy Hollywood creatures of the night within these pages but monsters that seem to have crawled from the darkest corners of Dickens's fertile imagination. The orphaned Pip is an unlikely werewolf, ever pining for the aloof slayer Estella, and Miss Havisham's hermetic existence amplifies her tortured suffering as a brokenhearted vampire. The twists and turns of the plot follow familiar paths into uncharted territory, leaving us reassured and spellbound all at once.
Verdict The original Dickens is eerie and unsettling, and Erwin rises to the challenge, creating another masterpiece by making the strange even stranger. Highly recommended; astounding great fun!—Jennifer Anderson, Texas A&M Univ.–Corpus Christi Lib.

Bronte, Charlotte & Sherri Browning Erwin. Jane Slayre: The Literary Classic with a Blood-Sucking Twist. Library Journal (3/8/10)

Gallery Bks.: S. & S. Apr. 2010. c.416p. ISBN 978-1-4391-9118-7. pap. $15. FANTASY No stranger to paranormal fiction, Erwin (To Hell with Love, Naughty or Nice) raises the bar for the next generation of “monster classics.” Jane is orphaned and raised by vampires, sent off to a boarding school (that breeds zombies for domestic help), and loses her love to a lunatic werewolf. It’s a ghastly new spin on the familiar, page-turning classic Jane Eyre. Poignant and charming, Jane could give Buffy a run for her money. Unlike Seth Grahame-smith’s novel but disjointed Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (the zombies were an awkward insertion), Erwin seems to be channeling Brontë and the monsters are a seamless addition to the text. The story takes an unexpected turn towards the end, keeping readers entranced. Verdict Similar to Sharon Shinn’s Jenna Starborn, Erwin’s unique and gripping revision of a well-loved classic. Enthusiastically recommended for all.

Publishers Weekly (4/12)

Jane Slayre. Another entry in the growing genre of horror mashups (ranging from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter), this volume takes Brontë's classic and turns the Reed family into vampires, Jane Eyre's classmates at Lowood into zombies, and Bertha Rochester into something far more dangerous than a madwoman. While Jane herself remains much the same, the supernatural additions prove highly amusing, turning the gothic elements of the original up to eleven while preserving the story's post-Victorian coming-of-age conventions. Despite her whimsical and irreverent modifications, Erwin displays great affection for Brontë and her characters; the undeniable spark between Erwin's Jane and Rochester is made all the more delightful by Jane's plucky fearlessness in the face of evil. With the possible exception of purists, fans of Jane Eyre will find much to love, with moments of laugh-out-loud hilarity; horror fans unfamiliar with the original will also be pleased, though they'll miss out on some of the comic nuance. Bitten By Books

"Jane Slayre is still serious and quiet — until she whips out her collection of Egyptian daggers and goes Buffy on your vampire ass."

"A superbly written page-turner in which Jane Eyre is re-imagined as a Buffy-style vampire slayer."

'Reader, I buried him.' So begins Sherri Browning Erwin's affectionate, funny and brilliantly clever monster mash-up of everyone's favourite literary classic. Mrs Reed and her children are vampires, Lowood is run by a voodoo headmaster who is turning his pupils into the walking dead, Mr Rochester's first wife is a werewolf, and Jane must learn to embrace her destiny as a slayer of evil before she can win her heart's desire. What's not to love? Jane Slayre is the one classic which can give Pride and Prejudice and Zombies a run for its money, and Sherri Browning Erwin's masterful take on a timeless tale will delight monster fans and lovers of Charlotte Bronte alike.

NAUGHTY OR NICE

Magical, sweet, and sexy. Paranormal fans will love this book."
--Lisa Plumley, Bestselling Author.

Naughty or Nice is a really cute romance. It was fun to read about the two men’s very different approach to Bennie and to watch her come into her own and decide what she wants in life. The story also contains several marvelous secondary characters who add to the humor and help stir up the plot. If you want an entertaining, sensual, yet fun romance, you will enjoy Naughty or Nice.
--Stevi B. at Manic Readers

Naughty or Nice was a fast read, had great mythological layering brought into the modern world [even a surprise visit from Ares and his killer birds], and had a nice overall holiday spirit.
